Identifying The Need
The Pharmaceutical Industry needs specialty
excipients that serve various functional requirements
in the finished formulation, and are also economically
viable.

The Rubicon Research Achievement
Rubicon Research has developed RubiXcipTM,
a novel multi functional polysaccharide excipient which
is obtained from the seeds of the Trigonella foenum-graecum,
better known as Fenugreek.

The Chemistry
Chemically galactomannan is likely to be responsible
for the high viscosity of RubiXcipTM
dispersions. This is a specific type of galactomannan
comprising of mannose backbone with galactose molecules
attached in a ratio of 1:1. This arrangement gives RubiXcipTM
its unique properties.

Properties of RubiXcipTM |
| |
|
The
first step in the isolation is to separate the
Fiber Rich Fraction (FRF) from the seed, which
is carried out by an elegantly simple mechanical
process. This FRF is then dispersed in water and
treated with eco-friendly solvents to give a white
to off-white, odourless powder, RubiXcipTM. |

Properties of RubiXcipTM
The most important property of galactomannan is its ability
to form viscous solution with water, which exhibits pseudoplasticity.
The viscosity-concentration relationship is nearly linear
on a semilog plot at different shear rates. Also, the
viscosity of the solution is independent of pH, temperature
(up to 600C) and presence of mono or divalent cations.
At 2% w/v concentration, the viscosity produced with RubiXcipTM
is higher compared to Methocel K100M (Dow chemicals). |
